Venice to Langa... in search of Freespace

  • Zeitz MOCAA, V&A Waterfront Cape Town (map)

The South African Pavilion for Architecture at the Venice Biennale being the worlds leading architectural exhibition that is held every 2 years was not present in 2018. The lack of a South African pavilion in Venice raises the broader question of the role of art and culture in South Africa and what value is placed by society at large on the arts, architecture and the built environment.

What is the relevance of the quality of the built environment in our modern society?

Historically the role of cultural norms, societal behaviours and responses was ingrained in African culture.

What has happened and what are the challenges?
